A Lasting Legacy: Dr. Paul Matson Retires After 38 Years

After an extraordinary 38-year career, we proudly celebrate Dr. Paul Matson and the lasting legacy he leaves at Orthopaedic & Fracture Clinic and across Southern Minnesota. Today marks his final day at OFC, and we thank him for the decades of dedication, care, and impact he’s made on our patients and community.

Throughout his decades of service, Dr. Matson has witnessed and helped shape the growth of OFC into a comprehensive orthopedic destination. From the development of Mankato Surgery Center in partnership with Mankato Clinic, to the expansion of Physical Therapy, the Back Center, MRI, and the Performance Lab, his career has been defined by a commitment to excellence and advancing care for the people of our region.

Service has always been a central theme throughout Dr. Matson’s career. From serving as Medical Staff President at Mankato’s Immanuel-St. Joseph’s Hospital to serving on numerous state and national boards as President of the Minnesota Medical Association and the Minnesota Orthopaedic Society and Minnesota Orthopedic Society, American Medical Association Delegate and AAOS Board of Councilors, and representing Minnesota State University, Mankato as the team physician for ten years, his focus has consistently been on giving back to the profession and the community.

That spirit of service also took him beyond the United States. Dr. Matson and his wife, Jodi, served at a mission hospital in Cameroon for 9 months and he and his family have made several more mission trips to Kijabe, Kenya, where he has provided orthopedic surgery and teaching to the residents and community.

“It has been my honor and privilege to serve the people of Mankato and Southern Minnesota,” Dr. Matson shares. “While I will miss my patients and colleagues, I retire knowing the community is in very good hands.”

For nearly four decades, Dr. Matson has valued the collegial environment and shared dedication of the surgeons and staff at OFC. That culture of teamwork and patient-first care has made each day meaningful and rewarding.

As he begins this well-earned retirement, Dr. Matson looks forward to spending more time outdoors downhill and cross-country skiing, biking, canoeing, fishing, and hunting, along with cherished time with his wife, five children, and ten grandchildren.

Thank you, Dr. Matson, for your leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the people of Southern Minnesota. Your impact will be felt for generations to come.
